Medical Referral
Your child may be referred by Northern Plains Children’s Advocacy Center for a specialized medical exam with our partnering medical provider. We make referrals to specially trained medical providers who understand the unique needs of children who may have experienced abuse or other trauma.
The purpose of the exam is to make sure your child is healthy, that there are no medical concerns requiring attention, and, most importantly, that your child is okay. The exam also provides an opportunity to address any questions or concerns your child may have about their body or health.
The medical provider will assess your child’s health, address any medical concerns, and document medical findings when appropriate. The exam may also provide important information to help guide your child’s medical care and overall well-being. When appropriate, the medical exam may also identify or document physical findings that can provide important information about what a child may have experienced.
The provider will explain what is happening, answer questions, and work to make the experience as comfortable and supportive as possible. Our team can help families understand the referral process and what to expect.
